Who are we?
notabeta is a new startup dedicated to creating a variety of software and online services. Our goal is to create niche software that makes people’s lives more creative. Basically, we plan to release a bunch of different software, and see what sticks.
What does it mean?
We’re just poking fun at the “Web 2.0″ craze of releasing everything as a “beta”. Our philosophy is that most people these days are aware that software bugs are a fact of life, and production software is the best place to find and eradicate them. Our pledge is to never hide behind a “beta” badge, always releasing new updates and functionality based on agile principles.
What are your current projects?
We currently have several projects in development…
- Ton Of Monkeys – A social network based around the concept of writing. Currently in an alpha phase, waiting on potential educational partners to help improve the concept.
- Moneyjot – A simple online budgeting system. It’s like Quicken, but without all those extra bells and whistles that make it so annoying to use! Currently in pre-alpha.
- (Unnamed) – A system to help with the process of getting out of debt. This will be as much a “wizard” as software, helping to guide you through the basic principles of debt reduction. Currently in conceptualization phase.

What technologies do you use?
We use whatever feels appropriate for the project. For small projects, we love Sinatra. For larger projects, we like to stick with Microsoft technologies. For those in the middle, perhaps Ruby on Rails is most appropriate. We like to mix it up to keep things interesting, but not at the expense of losing productivity.

notabeta is currently unfunded, and contracts out all design work. If you are interested in either investment or doing design work in exchange for a share of the business, please email david@notabeta.com.
